Wabannutao Eeyou School is one of the smallest schools under the jurisdiction and operation of the Cree School Board. The following is a brief description of our school:

  • The language of instruction is Cree and is taught from pre-k to secondary 5. English (Second Language) is taught from grade 1 to secondary 5. Every school follows the GVC (Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum).
  • Many of our teachers are from the community and most of them teach at the Elementary level. W.E.S. also proudly undertakes the responsibility of training interested candidates to help them become qualified teachers. This is done in collaboration with Professional Development and the Associate Teachers. At present, there is one trainee in our school, working in the Secondary/Elementary Sector. Our goal, through this program, is to have all Native teachers in all sectors and specialized areas.
  • All of our administrative and support staff is Native: SAT, CEA, Office Agent Technician, Secretary/COBA Technician, Maintenance/Security and School Administrators. There are 18 employees working as administrative and support staff.
  • We are able to offer many specialized programs/projects through New Paths, Niskamoon Corporation, Sharing of Expertise Plans, and Special Education Budgets. Such programs include: Science Fairs, Art/Music Extracurricular Activities, Cultural/Traditional Teachings, Bush Camp Days, Tutorial Services, and Sharing of Expertise Workshops. These projects make a difference in the teaching and learning in different areas of the curriculum.

School Mission Statement

To provide each of our Students with an Eeyou-based education that will help prepare them to serve their families, community, Eeyou Nation and the larger society in a capable and confident manner.

We know that it takes the whole community to educate a child. With this understanding, we in Eastmain achieve our Mission by:

  • Working together in a cooperative partnership, including students, parents, teachers, school, leaders and administrators, elders and other community representatives and organizations.
  • Ensuring the students know their Eeyou traditions and teachings and practice and strengthen their Eeyou language and culture;
  • Helping students develop personal responsibility, good judgment and a desire for life-long learning;
  • Fostering a healthy self-image and life-style that enables the students to dream and to be confident and happy wherever they choose to work.
