Editor's Note: A delegation of students traveled to Kuujjuaq in March to compete in the Quebec Aboriginal Science Fair. Two of those students won first place among Grade 6 contestants. Here is their story.


On February 14, 2019, we won first place at the regional science fair in Waaskaganish and had the chance to go to the provincial science fair in Kuujjuaq on March 27-28, 2019.

Ready to Starting a Business

Each year, dozens of tradespeople and artisans graduate from vocational programs at Sabtuan Adult Education Services. Entrepreneurship is an exciting possibility for these graduates. Starting a business is also a dream for many others throughout Eeyou Istchee.

Upcoming programs at Sabtuan Regional Vocational Training Centre (SRVTC) will help community members turn these entrepreneurial ambitions into a reality.

SRVTC has announced several Spring 2019 programs that respond to the growing demand for Cree-owned businesses across Eeyou Istchee. Two new programs, “Starting a Business” and “Construction Business Management,” will focus on entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. Other vocational programs will include competencies that can be used to build mechanical contracting, tourism, or sports-related businesses in the future.

Students in Cree School Board schools marked February 27 by learning what it means to be kind. Whether helping one another or reaching out to a friend who is feeling blue, Pink Shirt Day at VMS Elementary in Mistissini was a day to highlight the importance of respect - a traditional Cree value.

The Sabtuan Regional Vocational Training Centre wishes to highlight the outstanding achievement of its 2018 graduating classes.

We had two graduations for “Northern Heavy Equipment Operations" in 2018, with 14 trained and certified professionals entering the field in the new year.
