Students from each community in Eeyou Istchee gathered in Mistissini June 7, 2019 to mark the 20th anniversary of Annie Whiskeychan Day in the Cree School Board.
Activities and contests included goose-calling, goose-trussing, a spelling bee, tug-of-war, square-dancing, tea-boiling and bannock-making, fire-building and a canoe portage, along with baby-wrapping and a slingshot challenge. A highlight of the day was the motivational talk by former NHL player (and the first Inuk to be drafted to the NHL) Jordin Tootoo who spoke to a packed auditorium.
The day began with a Walking Out Ceremony for Grace (daughter of Allan and Hattie Matoush) and Hudson (son of Julia Palmer and Dan) and words of welcome from Mistissini Chief Thomas Neeposh. It concluded with a feast, awards, and games.
