Students in schools around Eeyou Istchee took part in annual science fairs to determine eligibility for the Regional Science Fair held February 14, 2019, in Waskaganish.
The winners of the Regional Science Fair are entitled to attend the Quebec Aboriginal Science and Engineering Association (QASEA) Fair, hosted by Kativik Ilisarniliriniq in Kuujjuaq March 26 to 28, 2019.
“Under the theme The Science of Indigenous Knowledge, the science fair brings together First Nations and Inuit youth from across the whole province. It provides a unique opportunity for them to connect over science projects that are rooted in their respective cultures”, says Marc Lalande, President of QASEA, in a media release March 5, 2019.
The Regional Winners that went to Kuujjuaq were:
- 1st place: Rim Rhdaifi & Ella Grimstead, Grade 6 (Chisasibi)
- 2nd place: Amber Metabie & Kaylee, Grade 5 (Waswanipi)
- 3rd place: Jessalyn House & Lucy Sam, Secondary 2 & 3 (Chisasibi)
At that event, students had unique opportunities to experience a new community, as well as further explore science and hone their presentation skills.
Congratulations to all who participated!
