Introduction
Waapihtiiwewan School has been open since September 21, 1993. Our school was
designed by the famous Native architect, Douglas Cardinal.
The school was named by a youth of Ouje-Bougoumou named Irene Bosum. The name chosen was “Waapihtiiwewan” which means a “vision”.
Waapihtiiwewan School is a Pre-K to Sec. V School with a student population of about 130. The average number of students per class in the Secondary Sector is as small as 2-3 students to about 8-10 and the average number of students in elementary is as small as 8-10 to about 15-20 (combined classes).
There are three Language of Instruction (sectors) at Waapihtiiwewan School. Pre-K to Grade One is taught in Cree. Grade 2-6 is taught in English or French. Secondary 1-5 are taught in English or French. There is also a “Cree Language Class” that students from Grade 1 to Secondary V attend on a 6-day schedule. Also a Second Language, which can be English or French. What most students look forward too is the “Cree Culture Class”, this is held one week every month.
The location of the school is very easy to find, as it is situated right around the Center Core of the Community. It has its’ own play-ground and a lot of room for the students to move around when they are outside. The Youth Center is just right beside our school. The Sports Complex is right behind the school, also most of the out-door facilities are situated around our school.
