Before the Cree School Board
Schooling in the James Bay Area was first controlled by Catholic and Anglican missionaries. In the 1960s, the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development took on a key role.
Later, education was provided by both the Department and the Commission Scolaire Nouveau Quebec. Cree children were sent from their communities to residential schools at age 7 or 8, for up to 10 months a year. The teachers were nonĀnative, and the curricula and textbooks were written by southerners.
